Thinking out of the box
Adrian has a great grasp of the design of networks, transport maps, and metro railway maps, and has developed better ways of presenting information for visitors and passengers.
In the 1990s, he recognised that London’s underground trains were full to capacity, whilst its buses were underutilised. To increase bus ridership, passengers needed information on (a) what route to take, (b) where to get on, and (c) when to get off. He conceived the concept of the “Star Map” for London Buses, which solved the first two objectives; it became the basis for the current London Bus Map in use today (the third objective is now solved by audio-visual means within each bus).
He designed a new visitor map for Alton Towers Theme Park in England, to enable visitors to find any of the 200 points of interest within moments.
In 2006, Adrian carried out a total life-of-the-community study of the medieval English market town of Stamford for its Chamber of Commerce and Trade. He identified the River as an underused resource, identified the crucial importance of retaining businesses within the town centre if its 500 listed buildings were to be properly maintained, showed how the life of the town centre could be rejuvenated, and how millions of pounds of real estate could be brought back into active use. His 60 page report, “Stamford 3000”, was warmly endorsed and circulated to every household and business in the town.
