Quick to set up and easy to maintain, panel mazes offer fast, fun and colourful puzzles that can be created and reconfigured almost anywhere. Panel fence mazes have two great advantages. They can be built using modular parts in a few weeks and they are ideal when space is at a premium, since their narrow barriers allow the paths to occupy almost all of the available area – unlike hedge mazes.

Early evidence of the idea of a panel fence maze is an 1893 patent by Ferdinand Guth, ‘a subject of the Emperor of Austria, living in New York’, for a panel maze made of timber with revolving doors to change the design, and a viewing platform.
Adrian Fisher finds panel mazes allow for highly ingenious three-dimensional puzzle mazes, since wooden bridges only need short decks to cross over several paths. To this, Adrian often likes to add the fourth dimension of Time using Walk-Through Parting Waterfalls and Foaming Fountain Gates to add complexity.
